4. Internal and External Conceptions of `context'


Given the above picture of context and ignoring, for the moment, the effect that different heuristics will have in different domains, there are at least two ways in which we (as people discussing the idea of context) can make a reference to this process. I will call these the `internal' and `external' ways of referring to context. The distinction drawn here is not new (e.g.
[10]), but I wish to re-tell it in terms of the picture presented herein.
