I think the best of reductionism is preserved in General Systems Theory.
The reduction of a system into the behavior of its parts corresponds to
the general system. Emergent structures corresponds to special systems
within the general system domain. The Special system may anything as
long as it does not leap outside the general system to which it belongs.
In other words, emergent phenomena never violates the behavior of the
parts. Therefore the emergent structures are invisible from a
reductionistic viewpoint since we then only see the general behavior of
the system which is determined by the parts.
