My purpose was to show the ontological problems with memetics, not to actually
propose that waves are viruses. As I see it many culturally emergent patterns
have been misclassified as viruses. One of Stuart Kauffman's endaveours is
precisely to show that many phenomena in life that has been dogmatically
assigned to natural selection is more comfortably classified as emergent
structures. Culture is an oozing arena of emergence. Therefore it would be
particularly sad if this were to be constrained in the language of replication.
