Session Chair: Luis Rocha

Call for Papers

One of the recent trends in Information Sciences has been the employment
of biological metaphors in the
construction of artificial systems used to study and control complex
systems. In particular, concepts such
as self-organization, evolution, situated action, and emergence are
wildly used today to describe a
move towards more implicitly controlled architectures of artificial
systems, from the centralized, explicit
control systems of traditional engineering and organizational sciences.
This move can be seen for
example in the proliferation of agent-based technologies, and on the
growing interest in the sciences of
complexity that study precisely these concepts.

The aim of this session is to collect scientific, conceptual, and
engineering advances in the areas of
emergent computation, which may be relevant to the manner in which
manufacturing and organizational
systems are built. The challenge for complex systems research is now to
propose ways of fruitfully
incorporating its recently accumulated knowledge, into the design of
human-computer interfaces with a
high degree of connectivity such as computer integrated manufacturing
systems and the Internet. Can we
harness the emergence of computation or behavior from the local
interactions of simpler components in
order to build useful, flexible and adaptable artifacts? How can we
study the success and reliability of
such self-organizing systems? How much uncertain behavior are we willing
grant these systems to
improve adaptability?
