How did you hear about PCP? Alta-Vista search for complexity issues
My primary interest is to *understand* the informational protein folding
problem. Proteins are probably the smallest yet most important irreducibley,
complex systems under study today. Despite them being composed of only 20
different building blocks (amino acids), they are able to fully represent the
biochemical shape space and catalytic space. It is widely recognized, that the
information contained in their amino acid sequence uniquely and robustly
specifies the three-dimansional structure. But exactly how, remains elusive. We
refer to this as the protein folding problem; the specific questions about the
information mapping from primary to tertiary structure as the informational
protein folding problem (distinct from the mechanistic and cellular aspects).
While the inherent complexity has thwarted all our attempts at a quantitative
understanding of protein structure, the very notion of complexity and what it
may mean for the type of questions that can reasonably be asked about proteins,
is only poorly understood in the biochemical community. Here, I hope for
progress.
