Arborescent design of systems? [fwd]

Can anybody help this guy? I quickly translate his request from the French:

"I read with much interest some of your articles. I am presently doing
research on design methods applicable to the development of new automobile
concepts, for which we wish to use the systems approach, i.e. start from a
function and proceed by arborescence of subsystems. Working hypothesis:
make a throw-away (and recyclable!) vehicle which would last 15000 km
without repair =3D> identify the arborescence [tree structure] of systems,
define the control laws, and assure the homogeneous wear of the components.
Could you suggest some readings to me? Thank you in advance."

Since he knows English, I suggest you would immediately reply to him.
