Of course, the basic homomorphic structure of the modeling relation has
been known and used for some time, at least formally. It's centrail in
category theory, for example. In terms of the semantics as used in
philosophy of science related to mesurement and modeling, Cariani says
Hertz invented it before WW II. Turchin claims he also invented it
independently (his students called it "Turchin's scaffold" for the shape it
made). Suffice it to say that it's been around a long time.
