clarification to Jeff's statement about von Neuman, etc. Rosen did not object
to the idea of a self-replicating system using a "constructor". What he did
refute is the idea that Turing's proof for a universal computer carried
automatically to prooving a universal constructor must exist as well. The issue
is a clear example of how quickly even someone as bright as von Neuman got
is the difference in causalities in the two cases. it is interesting that even
someone as bright as von Neuman got into trouble by ignoring the causal
relations.
