I'd like to plug the new book by Roger Penrose, SHADOWS OF THE
MIND. His thesis is that consciousness is of a non-computational
nature... ie, it can't be done on a computer. He uses non-
computable examples from the formal world (the halting problem, the
tiling problem, the Diophantine equation solvability problem) and
suggests that there are also (but as yet not demonstrated) non-
computable relations in the actual material world. He says that we
need to re-think our physics. Sounds a lot like Rosen!
